Hey, people!
TGIF and I believe you are looking forward to a relaxing weekend. I am going to be solving a reader query today and I hope you will find my ideas useful! (And hey, I’ll be going to a movie this evening! I’ll share more about it on the Just Like That series)
Shreya Dharmarajan asks..
I’m staying in a hostel. My hair has become very very dry and is falling off too much! Can you suggest me some tips to regrow my healthy hair back?
My hair routine: I shampoo my hair once a week. And I leave my hair oil overnight! In the morning, I wash it off with my regular shampoo.
My diet: They don’t provide nutritious food in hostels. So I’ve to eat whatever they give. When I was at my home, I used to eat salads and much healthy food. But here I can’t and I eat some unhealthy, tasteless food most of the time. Please suggest me some tips to regrow my healthy hair!
Hey, Shreya!
Thanks for writing to me. I hope you’re doing good. Coming to your query – you’ve answered it all. You’re not concentrating on proper nutrition and that could be the main reason for your hair loss! Hair loses moisture and becomes dry when you don’t take care of your diet. I must honestly tell you that unless you fix your eating pattern, you won’t be seeing visible results.
DIY hot oil treatments and spas can help your hair shine but at the end of the day, you need to find the root cause of the issue (in your case, I think it is nutrition deficiency) and fix it for a permanent solution!
I understand that you’ve no access to much healthy food in your hostel. But you can always follow shortcuts to include protein/vitamins to your diet! Having boiled soy chunks every day can really help you. It has a lot of protein and it will definitely reflect in your hair growth rate! It’s not only easily available but quick to make. If you eat eggs, consider including 2 every day. Consume a LOT of fruits! If you’ve very less time to contribute to healthy eating, I suggest you to stock almonds, walnuts, and dry fruits. Have a hand full every morning before you leave for college/work.
Meanwhile, also take care of your hair externally. I suggest that you wash your hair twice a week followed by conditioning. If you’ve excessive body heat, you can lose hair (really a lot!) due to that as well. Take B-complex supplements after consulting your doctor! (I take a Becosules capsule every day and it really helps me combat hair fall and heat acne!)
So that’s all about it! Your hair care needs should be addressed both internally and topically! Include raw healthy food to your diet whenever possible if you don’t get access to healthy cooked food! Include protein EVERY single day for at least 3 months, (soy chunks, chana dal, chicken, eggs etc!) do go for a weekend oiling treatment once a week and write back to me with your results. (Don’t forget to click the progress of your hair growth every month! It is very important) All the best!

I’ll let it out today – I ventured into blogging mainly because of you, Lancy. I had been a silent reader of MABH for long and even wanted to write for you (mailed you once but perhaps those mails were submerged in the sea of mails that you may be receiving daily) :P Thanks for inadvertently introducing me to your hair care regimen. Looking forward to your words on mine :)
