Why Do You Lose Much Hair While Shampooing?

In the morning, one of our reader contacted me with a query ‘Why do I lose so much hair when I shampoo?’ This is something important! We usually notice an extra hair loss while shampooing, oiling, combing and massaging our hair. Right? Do you have any idea why this happens? Is it normal or abnormal to lose hair while shampooing? How much hair is normal to lose while shampooing? We can line up questions like these in our mind and finally, here comes the solution.

In this post, we are going to discuss the facts and truths on losing hair while shampooing. Go ahead and read below!

Do Not Panic! It is Natural Shedding

There is nothing to panic about the extra hair loss while shampooing as our hair naturally sheds everyday. If you are losing much hair while combing, shampooing are massaging, it means that you are losing hair strands those are about to shed ANYWAY. They are just in their resting phase (Telogen) and are about to come out of your scalp anyway. When you give pressure to your hair while applying hair oil, shampoo and such, these hair strands come out quickly but this doesn’t mean that your hair fall is caused due to shampoo, oil or anything. However, if you still doubt about it, you can make the process more gentle to ensure you are not losing any healthy new hair by over pressure.

How Much Hair is Normal to Lose While Shampooing?

Not just shampooing, a person may lose up to 100 strands of hair everyday and this is completely normal. Your hair sheds throughout the day; while combing, while shampooing, while oiling, while massaging etc but we mistake that these things causes hair loss. Whatever you do, whatever you don’t do, these hair strands WILL shed naturally. So throw out the fear of shampooing or oiling your hair. Cleansing and moisturizing your hair is very much important in your hair care routine hence one shouldn’t feel any allergic about shampooing or oiling hair in the fear of hair loss. On the other hand, if you are losing more than 100 hair strands in a single day and if this continuous for a long period, then it is necessary to consult your physician.

Do Shampoos Cause Hair Loss?

No! Not all the shampoos cause hair loss in humans. If you are doubting about excess hair fall, then go for sulphate and paraben free shampoos. pH balancing and moisturizing ones would do the trick. There are many herbal shampoos claiming to be gentle available in the market. Consult your dermatologist and choose the one which suits you best. If you are a field worker or a busy bee, you compulsorily need to wash your hair at least twice a week with shampoo or any other hair cleanser in order to clear out the dirt, oiliness and bacteria accumulated.

Tidbit: Use a wide toothed comb to detangle and style your hair as this would reduce hair loss while combing. Make sure that you are gentle to your hair all the time whether you shampoo, oil, comb or style it and this will avoid accidentally and unwanted hair damages, especially when you are loving to achieve long and strong hair.

  1. hi lancy… quite a nice post… i can totally relate to people who fear hair fall… nd i totally agree with you that to combat this one should start using paraben and sulphate free shampoos that are quite easily available in the market now :)

    1. Thank you Supriya.. Yes, Paraben free shampoos and other hair products are the best when it comes to hair fall combat :) Glad that you found this post useful.

  2. I use palmers cocoa butter shampoo which claims to be sulphate and paraben free. But it does not lather much and I feel like there’s alot of hairfall when I shampoo. Could you suggest anything better to cleanse my hair with?

  3. Hi Lancy

I’m 26 years old male from Kerala.
I started suffering from severe hairloss from my early twenties and consulted a dermatologist.
He gave minoxidil solution to apply on scalp twice a day.
I have been using it for the past 3 years.
Along with minoxidil he also advised me to use a ketonid anti Dandruff shampoo.
My problem while I’m bathing and shampooing there is excessive hair fall.Even though I use shampoo twice a day white flakes appears on the scalp.I don’t know how to remove these white flakes from scalp.May be due to this I loose many hair while combing.
Please suggest me a remedy for this

    1. Your dermatologist should give you an injection, hair loss does not only come from shampooing or combing. Sometimes when we are very stressed out, and our lives are too busy for our daily time we can get to lose hair and sometimes leaving bald spots the size of a nickel. You should ask your doctor about your hair loss. About the sclap I can tell you that’s a disease that should be treated with a special shampoo that can only be used 3 times a week, but you can still wash your hair in two days with a regular dandruff shampoo. I know about this because I had “stress spots” on my head and my son suffers from this dandruff that the doctor said it’s bacteria. It comes from covering the head with caps and other fashion stuff. Hope this helps
